SPOU: @I12@ Date: 26 JUL 1919 Place: London, ENG(Medical):'Caryl' as she was known to everybody was only eight years old when her father was posted to Gibraltar as Senior Ordinance Officer with the rank of Colonel, just before the family embarked she came down with scarlet fever, she and her mother were not allowed to sail and had to see out the quaranteen period. her older sisters continued on as planned and joined their father at the 'Rock'. Caryl obviously bounced back to good health as newspaper cuttings show her participating in an' opera comique'- Rip van Winkle put on by Members of the Garrison on 5th January 1901. She often related memories of very pleasant times living at the 'Rock' and walks up the roads with her father and seeing the apes- it was said that if the apes ever left Gibraltar so would the British!
Very soon after this Colonel Tate became extremely ill and was shipped back to England where he died on 12th March 1901 of a brain tumour.
Entitlements for wives of Army Officers were then not as they are today and Caryl's mother found it hard going with her three daughters. the eldest, Sibyl, was engaged to and married Sir George Duff Sutherland Dunbar of Hempriggs and went with him to India, where she subsequently died. Muriel stayed with her mother for the time being and Caryl was able to enter The Royal School for Army Officer's Daughters at Bath. where she finished her education.
On 10 March 1913 she began a journey which she would remember for the rest of her life. She went as a travelling companion with her Cousin Helen Abbey to Corsica via Nice for a holiday with Helen's son, Walter Abbey who had property there.
Some time after that, the Great War having broken out, Caryl was able to secure a position in the War Office as a Secretary, this job lasted until Friday 31st of January 1919. It was while employed there that she took up serious Art and became a pupil at Hassell's Art School in Kensington, London.
It seems that this occurred on Wednesday 14th May 1919.
About this time Caryl began to be disenchanted with Sir George Dunbar who had asked her to marry him following the death of Sibyl, his former wife
On Monday 5th June 1919, it so happened that Corporal Ashley Cooper took up a reconstruction offer by the Army to do some study in Art while in Europe and this was at the same School! Ashley's diary records that on 21st June he met Caryl and was invited to Mrs Tate's home for the weekend and so began evening visits.
The diary also records that on 20th June Caryl wrote to Sir George breaking off the engagement, so that was that!
Things began to move fast after the 21st as Ashley was received into the Catholic Church on Friday 25th July and having proposed marriage and being accepted, the wedding took place on 26th July at the Church of the Apostles, Pimlico, London.
They had a most enjoyable honeymoon at Wantage and it was there that Ashley did some of his best early work with pencils, some to be done over and over in pastels and watercolour in later years.
