LABEL4: Johnston TOL blocked till 1843.
BIO:He was born in 1799.He married Hannah Parry on July 14th 1814.Hannah was baptised in 1787 at Chester,Eng.Five sons and three daughters were born to them before William was charged with stealing flowers and other goods and chattles.William was then 35 years old and was a gardener at Cheshire. He was convicted on March 25 1833 and sentenced to"...two months confinement in the city gaol at the end of that time to be transported for 14 years. On 18th July 1833 he was removed and put on board the "Ganymede"at Woolwich. He arrived at Port Jackson on board the "Lloyds" on Dec.18th 1833 and was assigned to Julia Johnston of Annandale,on the property now known as Horsley Park.Three years later,Hannah and six of their children arrived as free immigrants on board the "Ellen"on 21\2\1836.Hannah believed she could have William assigned to her but each of several attempts by her and William were refused because Julia did not wish to lose a good servant. He obtained quite a record for irregular conduct and was given several minor sentences,it is believed these were all trumped up to prevent him getting his ticket of leave. Hannah died on12\4\1841,she was 54 years old. Her eldest daughter Susannah married Samuel Phillips in February that year and had gone to Molong so the rest of the children went up to her. William received his T.O.L.on 6\3\1843 and was allowed to work in the Police District of Liverpool. However,William had repeatedly visited the Police District of Parramatta and had received several cautions against being there.William had made several applications to remain in Parramatta but the District office was not prepared to allow him. When brought before the Bench and charged with disobediance of orders, his T.O.L.was cancelled and was sent to Hyde Park Barracks. This could be when he was made head gardener of what is now the Botanical Gardens.William eventually received his C.O.F.on 5\4\1847. When he arrived in Molong is not known but he died on27\2\1849 when thrown from a horse at a racemeeting in Molong. He was buried in the old cemetery-now the bowling green.ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
