Obit.-Hay Newspaper-Wed.16th February 1954:Mr Arthur Ambrose Murray well known Hay and Carathool District resident, died yesterday,at the Hay District Hospital after a short illness. He was 78.Deceased came originally from Echuca when he was about 16 years of age and lived first in Hay and then at Carathool. He qwas widely known and esteemed as a stockman, which calling he followed for many years. He was for 26 years a mail contractor being on the Carathool-Neyliona run, most of the time doing the journeys with a horse and sulky.Deceased remained fairly active until a few months before his death and retained his interest in sporting affairs in Carathool. He earlier played cricket and football when that Centre maintained teams and and quite recently still umpired cricket matches. Mr Murray is survived by his wife who he married 56 years ago as Miss Susan Simpson of Hay He is survived also by two sons,Les ( Camperdown,VIC),Ernie (Carathool)and five daughters Ruby(Mrs.Henderson,Carathool),Rose(Mrs.Bell,Albury)Francis(Mrs.St ewart,Bombala),Vera(MRS.Killeen,Port Fairey,Vic.)and Isabella(Mrs.Cook,Sydney)One daughter predeceased him.The funeral took place today to the Roman Catholic Portion of the Hay cemetery, where Rev. Father Glancy officiated at the graveside.MrH. Hyde was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Some records say "Jobson" instead of "Hobson" as his third name.
Arthur and Susan were working the Carrathool punt when Leslie was born ref Letter from Vera to Doreen.
See notes.
There seems to be difficulty in tracing William's birth date.
The date 1844 has been calculated from his stated age on the marriage certificate of 21 in 1865.
He and Rosina were married at Sandhurst which was the old name for Bendigo.--at least this is where the Registration was recorded for 11th Aug1865.
Their son William Henry, born at Serpentine on 13th Aug 1865 was baptised by a passing Monk and the birth was registered at Raywood two days later,ie 15th Aug 1865--it seems likely that the actual marriage took place at Serpentine as well,on 11 Aug 1865.
There was another male child born apparently, between Ellzabeth and Arthur, but no details are yet recorded.
Investigate the possibility that he was the son of Elizabeth Murray,a widow of 40 who married Samuel Gill of the Coramandel Valley near Adelaide in 1845.
