Story from Freeman Dines to son Gary Dines September 2003
In 1926 Freeman and Ernest were out hunting near Clarence
and Nellie (Burgett) Collins house. As they were returning from
there hunting trip, two men were approching the front gate.
Clarence was in jail for selling Bootleg alcohol, and they were
looking for Clarence to buy some alcohol. Ernest told the two
men not to bother his mother, or he would shoot them.
They continued to go through the gate and Ernest shot one of
the men, but did not kill him, they ran away never to return.
The Sheriff came by the house but said Ernest did what was right
and no charges were made

in a letter dated November 16th, 1914 from Joesph Elijah Dines, in SandLake, Michigan, to his daughter Flora Meretta Dines in Iowa, he mentionsgiving to Flora, her daughter Louisa Mabel (May) Burgett, address as MissMay Stevens, Woodland, Barry County, Michigan. Louisa (May) was born onJuly 31, 1897 so she would have been 17 years of age at this time. Shewas either adopted or living with the Stevens family. Louisa MabelBurgett/Stevens married Lester House in 1915, when she was 18 years ofage.
