Note for:   William Manton,   1804 - 4 Oct 1889         Index
Individual note:    WILLIAM2 MANTON (JOSEPH1) was born Abt. 1804 in Northamptonshire, ENG, and died 04 Octobe r 1889 in Cascade Road, Hobart, Tasmania, AUST (Source: Death Record - Hobart - RGD 35-1889-8 21.). He married MARY ANN WADWELL in England, daughter of WILLIAM WADWELL and ELIZABETH HENS ON. She was born December 1799 in Kings Cliffe, Northampton, ENG, and died 09 November 186 6 in New Norfolk, Tasmania, AUST (Source: Death Record - New Norfolk RGD 35-1866-379.).

Notes for WILLIAM MANTON:
William Manton was tried in Northampton on 25 August 1832 for stealing 3 steers and 1 heife r for which he received 14 years transportation to Van Dieman's Land. He arrived on the Lor d William Bentinck 2 on 6 April 1837. His native place was Fineshade, Stanford.

His convict records state his gaol report excellent character previous to this conviction. H ulk Report good. Married with 5 children. Stated this offence stealing 3 steers and 1 heife r. Prosecutor Squire Manton at native place. His convict records state he had a scar on th e back of his right hand.

William received his ticket of leave on 2 May 1844.

The Northamptonshire Country Council Record Office has advised that "William Manton is mentio ned in the Northampton Mercury but not in any detail. He was committed to the county gaol o n 1 April 1837, to await trial, and the cattle he stole were the property of John Monckton o f Fineshade.

Fineshade is a mansion, the seat of the Monckton family, in the north of the county. There w as never really a village there. Presumably Manton came from one of the villages near by, Wa kerley, Duddington, Kingscliffe or Blatherwycke perhaps."

MS papers 1615-3 Tasmania Transportation located at the Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellingto n, New Zealand indicates that William Manton was granted a pardon on 5th July 1848 on the con dition that he did not return to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

In an application dated 9 September 1839 William Manton requested his wife and children be se nt to Van Diemen's Land - refer to copy of document attached in Williams scrapbook.
