Individual note: JOHN WILLIAM3 GADD (JAMES COOK2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1814 in Farnham, Surrey, ENG (Sourc e: Baptism Record - England, Surrey, Farnham 1813-1875 Baptisms - No. 215.), and died 26 Janu ary 1888 in Cascade Road, Hobart, Tasmania, AUST (Source: Death Record - Hobart - RGD 35-188 8-1228.). He married SARAH ANN MANTON 03 May 1850 in St Matthews Church, New Norfolk, Tasman ia, AUST (Source: Marriage Record - New Norfolk RGD 37-1850-816.), daughter of WILLIAM MANTO N and MARY WADWELL. She was born Abt. 1836, and died 20 June 1917 in 378 Macquarie Street, H obart, Tasmania, AUST.

The Surrey Country Council in a letter dated 22 April 1994 stated "John Gadd and Henry Young , labourers of Ash appeared before the Surrey quarter sessions at their Epiphany adjournmen t of 20 March 1839. Both were accused for larceny by Henry Hart, Joseph Miles, William Phar o and Frederick Freeman for stealing from the person of Henry Hart 'one watch of the value o f twenty two shillings, two keys of the value of two shillings, one Seal of the value of on e shilling and knife of the value of one shilling, one handkerchief of the value of six penc e and one piece of the current silver coin of this Realm called a sixpence' . They were foun d guilty and, at the adjourned Easter session held on 27 May, Gadd was sentenced to be transp orted for 15 years.
John's convict records (CON 18/26) describe him as a single protestant man, 5'9 1/3", tall, s allow complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, small curled nose, he had two moles on his lef t arm.
He was transported on the Lord Lyndoch departing Plymouth on 5 September 1840 arriving in Hob art on 5 February 1841.
On arrival in Hobart Town John found himself continually in trouble with the law - various pe riods of probation/absent from muster, misconduct in having potatoes in his possession, recom mended that probation be set at two months, 15 April 1842 misconduct as yard keepers in allow ing, aiding and abetting W Fryer to deface the walls of the convict store and obtain some sto res from it improperly. Twelve months hard labour in chains. 19 April 1842, probation bein g absent from the Penitentiary without leave, 25 stripes on the back. 31 May 1842 misconduc t in breaking into the Commissariat store and taking a quantity of tobacco, tea and sugar - t welve months hard labour in chains. 28 May 1842 probation misconduct in having some fresh me at improperly in his sleeping berth, 30 stripes on the back. John spent time at Port Arthur.
